Port St. Lucie Police Sergeant Erik Levasseur remains hospitalized in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU) at HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital after sustaining critical injuries during an officer-involved shooting on December 1, 2025, according to the Port St. Lucie Police Department. The latest update details his ongoing recovery and the complex medical care following the incident.

Sergeant Erik Levasseur Critically Injured in Port St. Lucie Shooting

According to official sources, Sergeant Levasseur was shot twice in the face when officers responded to a 911 call involving a reportedly armed and drug-impaired individual. The suspect allegedly emerged with an assault-style rifle and opened fire, striking the sergeant and causing severe facial and eye trauma.

Medical Response and Initial Surgeries

Port St. Lucie Police reported that Sergeant Levasseur underwent immediate trauma care, including a medically induced coma. Surgeons performed initial procedures to repair his jaw, which was wired shut, and conducted a tracheostomy to secure his airway due to extensive facial injuries and swelling.

Ongoing Treatment for Severe Eye Injuries

According to the department’s December 11, 2025, media release, surgeons successfully removed additional bullet shrapnel from Sergeant Levasseur’s face on December 9. The shrapnel was lodged deeper than previously anticipated. He remains awake and alert in the TICU and is receiving continued specialized medical care.

Vision and Prognosis

Medical staff have confirmed that both of Sergeant Levasseur’s eyes sustained significant trauma. Currently, he has no vision, and doctors emphasize that it will take time, healing, and possible future reconstructive and eye surgeries to determine his long-term visual prognosis. There are no concerns of brain damage at this time, according to hospital staff.

Recovery and Community Support

Sergeant Levasseur is fully aware of the strong support from coworkers and the community, according to Port St. Lucie Police. The department highlighted the ongoing encouragement received by the sergeant and his family as he continues his recovery. His tracheostomy remains in place in preparation for any additional surgeries that may be required.

Department Statement and Future Updates

The Port St. Lucie Police Department asks the public to keep Sergeant Levasseur, his loved ones, and the department in their thoughts as his recovery progresses. Officials stated that additional updates will be provided as appropriate. Details may be updated as the investigation and medical care continue.
