Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Freight Train at 77th Street Crossing in Vero Beach

An adult male pedestrian was killed after being hit by a freight train Sunday morning at the 77th Street railroad crossing in Vero Beach. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was notified at 7:20 a.m. and responded to the scene, where the man was pronounced dead. In light of recent incidents, local efforts such as the implementation of quiet zones for train horns in St. Lucie County have aimed to improve safety and reduce noise along busy rail corridors. Several railroad crossings in the area were expected to remain closed until the train could be moved, and officials advised drivers to use alternate routes. Community awareness has increased following events like the No Kings protest that drew thousands in Vero Beach, highlighting the importance of public safety at crossings. No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
