Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations and Road Closures in Palm City

Several businesses near 3030 SW Martin Downs Blvd in Palm City were evacuated after an excavator struck a gas line late Tuesday morning. Similar emergency responses have recently occurred in the region, such as when I-95 was closed southbound in Fort Pierce following a major incident.

Evacuations and Closures

Martin County Fire Rescue responded to the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. on March 17, 2026. Portions of High Meadows Avenue were closed to traffic while TECO Gas crews worked to stop the leak by clamping the damaged line. This comes after recent weather events, including storms, flooding, and lightning impacting the Port St. Lucie area, which have also led to road closures and emergency alerts.

An emergency alert was issued to residents in the area. No injuries were reported, and officials have not indicated when the affected area will reopen. In a related environmental concern, Port St. Lucie residents recently reported a massive fish kill in a local canal, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the community.
