Martin County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warrant for Alexandra Delacaridad Gonzalez, a former property manager and bookkeeper for Avant-Garde Property Management, on multiple felony charges related to alleged embezzlement from local homeowners associations.
Allegations and Charges
Gonzalez is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Whitemarsh Reserve Homeowners Association in Stuart and The Dunes of Hutchinson Island. Authorities allege she wrote checks to herself from association accounts and falsified financial records to hide the theft. The charges include fraud exceeding $50,000, grand theft, uttering false instruments, and embezzlement. Similar financial crimes have recently made headlines in the region, such as the case where a Port St. Lucie tax preparer was sentenced for federal tax fraud.
Investigation
Martin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division began its inquiry after irregularities were reported by affected associations. Subpoenaed financial records reportedly showed the stolen funds were used for personal expenses. Investigators believe additional homeowners associations may have been affected. This investigation follows other recent local government controversies, including when a Fort Pierce commissioner resigned following an arrest and a St. Lucie County commissioner was investigated over residency claims.
