Florida legislators are reviewing several proposals aimed at reducing or eliminating property taxes across the state.
Key Proposals Under Review
State Rep. Ryan Chamberlin announced a plan on April 1 to seek a citizen-led constitutional amendment to eliminate property taxes, requiring about 900,000 petition signatures for the 2028 ballot. Another House-backed initiative would end non-school property taxes on homesteaded properties, pending 60% voter approval in 2026. Gov. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also called for eliminating taxes on homesteaded property, though detailed language has not been released. In the Senate, Sen. Florida State Senator Tom Leek is proposing a cap on local government spending tied to population growth and inflation, which could be enacted without a public vote. Recent changes in St. Lucie County’s millage rate for 2025 highlight the ongoing debate over property tax rates, while Port St. Lucie property taxes continue to rise despite recent millage rate cuts.
