A1A North Causeway Bridge Opens in Fort Pierce

The A1A North Causeway Bridge opened to drivers in Fort Pierce today at 8 a.m., moving traffic onto the new span and closing the former drawbridge the same day. New Bridge Replaces Drawbridge and Railroad Crossings

The new bridge replaces the drawbridge and removes the railroad crossings on the route between A1A and U.S. 1. It is the tallest bridge of its kind south of Jacksonville. For ongoing updates about the project’s progress, visit the North Causeway Bridge progress update in Fort Pierce. The project is managed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Construction began in 2023, with a cost of about $117 million. Drivers can now use the bridge while additional work continues.

Observation Deck and Pathways Still Under Construction

A 300-foot observation deck under the bridge is still under construction. The bike lanes and 12-foot shared-use pathways are closed for now.

Those pedestrian and bicycle connections are planned to link to the East Coast Greenway Trail. Community feedback has played a role in shaping the area, as seen with recent discussions about Hutchinson Island redevelopment.

Former Drawbridge Demolition Timeline

The former drawbridge closed today. It is expected to be demolished by late 2027.
