Port St. Lucie Launches Lottery for Summer Camp Enrollment

Port St. Lucie has introduced a new lottery system to manage enrollment for its popular summer camps, aiming to create a fairer registration process. Previously, camp spots filled within minutes under a first-come, first-served approach, leaving many families without options.

Expanded Summer Camp Opportunities in Port St. Lucie

This year, the city is significantly expanding its summer camp program, adding 210 new camper spots and establishing four additional locations across Port St. Lucie. City spokesperson Scott Samples emphasized the importance of ensuring children have engaging activities during the summer months.

“There’s always a need to make sure kids have something productive to do during summer,” Samples stated. “The lottery system will make enrollment more equitable and fair for all families.”

Lottery System Details and Enrollment Dates

The lottery registration period begins this Friday and continues through next Friday. Parents can select their preferred camp location during registration. The camps will operate from June 9 to August 1, providing ample summer activities for local children.

Local parent Shannon VanOstrand, who typically plans summer activities months ahead, welcomed the new system. “We usually plan at least three months in advance,” she said. “This lottery could simplify the process for many families.”

Summer Camp Fees and Community Response

Another significant change is the increased weekly fee, rising from $95 to $140. This adjustment reflects the city’s decision to eliminate subsidies, shifting the full cost to families participating in the program.

“The fee increase allows us to expand services and accommodate more campers,” Samples explained. “Costs are now fully covered by participants, making the program sustainable.”

Resident Austy Zimmer, whose children are nearing camp age, expressed satisfaction with the pricing structure. “It’s great to know the city offers these camps,” she said. “The cost seems reasonable considering the benefits.”

Expert Advice for Summer Camp Safety

As families prepare for summer camp, ensuring children’s safety remains paramount. Experts recommend verifying camp credentials, staff training, and safety protocols. For additional guidance on selecting safe summer camps, visit the CDC’s Summer Camp Safety Guidelines.

Port St. Lucie’s initiative reflects a broader effort to enhance community services and fairness in public programs. Families interested in participating should register promptly during the lottery period to secure a chance for their children to join these popular summer camps.
