Incident Details in Port St. Lucie
Port St. Lucie, Fla. – Devin Mills, a corrections deputy with the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, faces burglary charges after an alleged road rage event. Reportedly occurring off duty, the incident took place around 6 p.m. on the 100 block of SW Tulip Road.
The Port St. Lucie Police Department reported that the incident began when Mills, driving a Ford SUV, abruptly stopped and blocked a Chevrolet vehicle. Inside the blocked vehicle were an 18-year-old male and an 18-year-old female driver. Reports indicate that Mills exited his vehicle, approached the Chevrolet, and accused the occupants of tailgating.
Escalation and Arrest
The situation intensified as the vehicle occupants started recording the confrontation. Mills allegedly reached through the open window of the Chevrolet, grabbing the male passenger’s arm while attempting to seize his phone. Witnesses claimed Mills pulled the passenger’s arm out of the vehicle.
Sergeant Dominick Mesiti of the Port St. Lucie Police stated that cell phone recordings, along with statements from two independent witnesses, corroborated the account of the passengers. After the incident, authorities located Mills at his home, where he was arrested without resistance.
Reaction and Internal Investigation
Following the arrest, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office placed Mills on unpaid administrative leave and initiated an internal investigation. “It’s disappointing anytime a law enforcement officer is involved in a situation such as this that leads to an arrest,” Sergeant Mesiti remarked.
The Sheriff’s Office is expected to conduct a comprehensive administrative review alongside the legal proceedings. The investigation remains active, with further legal actions anticipated as the case progresses through the judicial process.
