Port St. Lucie Residents Advocate for Manatee Protection Zone in C-24 Canal

Port St. Lucie, Florida, finds its residents increasingly concerned about the safety of manatees navigating the C-24 Canal due to speeding boaters. Inhabitants along the canal have identified a particular stretch from Eagle Drive to the Southbend bridge, where there are no speed or wake restrictions, labeling it a “normal operation zone” as per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

Concerns Over Manatee Safety Due to Boat Speed

John Hesch, who resides along the canal, expressed worry about boats traveling at speeds of 30 to 50 miles per hour. He highlighted that the canal’s narrowness hinders boats from stopping swiftly to prevent collisions with manatees. These marine mammals often migrate to the shallow and warm waters of the canal during the winter, increasing the risk of accidents.

Proposed “Manatee Zone” for Enhanced Protection

In contrast, other sections of the canal enforce speed restrictions to protect manatees. Recognizing this discrepancy, residents, including Hesch, have proposed transforming the entire canal into a designated “manatee zone.” Such a designation would impose speed limits throughout, ensuring comprehensive safety for these gentle creatures.

Response from Authorities

The FWC has confirmed it is aware of the issue and is currently in discussions with St. Lucie County officials. A review of a permit application is underway, considering the conversion of the problem area into a slow-speed zone. This move reflects a significant step towards addressing residents’ concerns.

Urgency for Action

Hesch highlighted the diminishing habitats of manatees in South Florida, stressing the importance of timely interventions. He pointed out that minor protective measures could significantly reduce manatee injuries and support the preservation of their remaining environments. As the local community advocates for action, they await regulatory measures from the FWC and county authorities.
