Port St. Lucie Resident Raises Alarm Over Safety at Crosstown Parkway Intersection

Residents of Port St. Lucie are alerting officials to significant safety issues at the intersection of Crosstown Parkway and Congo Street. Notably, longtime resident Shar’Ronnie Ervin, who resides in the Oak Hammock neighborhood, has raised alarms about the dangers posed by frequent traffic accidents. Ervin was involved in a collision at this intersection in 2016 and continues to perceive a risk daily due to the heavy traffic through this busy area.

Recorded Incidents and Resident Experiences

Port St. Lucie police have recorded 20 accidents at the intersection since 2022, indicating a pattern of danger. Ervin highlighted the difficulties drivers face when leaving her neighborhood, explaining the need to cross three lanes of bustling traffic to access the median. This can leave vehicles straddled in the median awaiting an opportunity to complete their turn, thus heightening the risk of accidents.

Proposed Traffic Solutions

Ervin advocates for the installation of a traffic light to alleviate these hazards, noting that other neighborhoods along Crosstown Parkway have benefited from such measures. Despite addressing her concerns with city officials in 2023, Ervin expressed frustration over the lack of tangible progress in resolving the situation.

City Response and Potential Measures

A spokesperson for Port St. Lucie acknowledged the concerns expressed by residents and stated that Public Works is evaluating potential improvements. These enhancements are contingent on available funding as part of the city’s capital improvements and mobility master plans. Residents interested in requesting a traffic signal can participate through the city’s 1PSL program, accessible online, via an app, or by phone at 772.871.1775. Any requests for a traffic light would be subject to a feasibility study, which examines factors such as:

  • Traffic volume
  • Accident data
  • Signal proximity

This ongoing discourse between city officials and residents highlights broader issues concerning infrastructure and public safety in Port St. Lucie, as the community patiently awaits effective resolutions.
