Port St. Lucie Boosts Traffic Efficiency with Smart Signals

Port St. Lucie has implemented an advanced automated system to improve traffic flow by updating traffic lights in real-time. This initiative addresses longstanding concerns from residents about traffic congestion and prolonged wait times at intersections.

Real-Time Traffic Signal Coordination System

The city currently operates 110 traffic lights, with more than 40 intersections now equipped with an adaptive signal coordination system. This technology uses cameras and sophisticated algorithms to adjust traffic signals instantly based on real-time data.

Port St. Lucie Traffic Operations Administrator Paul Johnson, who has overseen city traffic for 26 years, explained the system’s benefits. “Computer systems inside the traffic signal cabinets use algorithms to analyze real-time data and adjust signal timing accordingly,” Johnson said.

Addressing Resident Concerns

Residents previously expressed frustration over traffic lights taking multiple cycles to pass through intersections, particularly during peak hours. Local resident Richard Blumsack highlighted these issues, noting significant delays at intersections near popular locations such as Wawa.

“I used to be able to just go out and go anywhere no more than just one cycle,” Blumsack said. “Now, you can sit at a traffic light for two, three cycles waiting to get through, especially in the afternoon.”

System Efficiency and Future Planning

With the new automated system, major intersections like Airoso Boulevard and Crosstown Parkway now have a maximum cycle duration of 190 seconds. The adaptive system groups vehicles efficiently along main corridors to minimize delays, although side roads may still experience longer wait times.

Johnson emphasized that the system is continuously adjusted to accommodate Port St. Lucie’s rapid population growth and ongoing construction projects. As more lanes and intersections are added, the city will expand the automated system accordingly.

Driver Cooperation Essential

Johnson also stressed the importance of driver attentiveness. Distracted driving, such as using mobile phones at lights, can disrupt the system’s efficiency. “If you don’t start driving when the light turns green, it might not register your car properly, eventually causing congestion,” Johnson explained.
