Port St. Lucie, FL – The fuel prices in Port St. Lucie have encountered slight variations over the past week, although they remain largely steady in comparison to the previous month. According to AAA data, gasoline in the Port St. Lucie metro area is currently priced at $3.18 per gallon as of February 27, slightly higher than the state average of $3.14.

These numbers reflect a minimal decrease of $0.01, or 0.4%, from last week’s data and a more significant drop of $0.14, or 4.2%, from the same period last year. Diesel prices have slightly edged up by $0.02, or 0.5%, over the last week, now standing at $3.78 per gallon. When compared year-over-year, diesel has decreased by $0.38, indicating a reduction of 9.1%. Historically, Port St. Lucie experienced its highest gasoline prices at $4.93 per gallon on June 14, 2022, and diesel peaked at $5.75 per gallon on June 22, 2022.

Regional and National Comparison

On a national level, the average gas price is currently $3.13 per gallon, with Southern states exhibiting the most affordable rates. Mississippi reports the lowest prices at $2.67 per gallon, whereas California encounters the highest at $4.81.

Geopolitical Influence on Gas Markets

Patrick De Haan, an economist and analyst at GasBuddy, highlighted the influence of current geopolitical issues on the fuel market, particularly regarding possible trade tariffs. Earlier this month, President Trump reached an agreement to delay imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports for 30 days. Nonetheless, there are persistent apprehensions about the economic effects if these tariffs are applied, especially concerning gas prices in regions like the Northeast, Great Lakes, Midwest, and Rocky Mountains.

“Trump’s new trade war has already triggered retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods, escalating tensions,” De Haan noted. “While tariffs on Canadian energy might significantly affect fuel prices, a prolonged trade war could possibly weaken global economies, reducing demand and partially offsetting the effects of tariffs.”

Comparative Analysis of Metro Areas

Port St. Lucie’s price dynamics exist amidst varying costs across major metro areas. Currently, Lihue (Kauai), Hawaii, reports the most expensive gas in the nation at $5.18 per gallon, while Henderson, Kentucky, offers the least expensive at $2.51.

This report benefits from the contributions of writer Tim Bruns and is part of a series that leverages automated data analysis across 371 metro areas. It underscores the fluid and ever-changing characteristics of the global fuel economy.
